A time to celebrate colours of life!

Posted by Aparajita Bharti on Wed, 07/03/2012 - 9:53am

Hindus all around the world are celebrating Holi this week. Holi- the festival of colours is as much a religious festival as a harvesting celebration. Holi marks the beginning of the spring season in India commemorating fertile land and good harvests. There are many instances in the Hindu mythology also which mark the Holi festival. The demon king's sister Holika was burnt on this day while trying to burn Prahlad - a devout follower of Lord Vishnu. Holi also celebrates divine love of Radha for lord Krishna and is celebrated for 16 days in places related to Lord Krishna's childhood.

In modern day and age, Holi is welcomed with breathless excitement as splash of colours and water filled balloons are showered on each other. It is also a time to celebrate with the neighbours as "Holi Milans" (Holi gatherings) are organised in urban neighbourhoods by residents associations. Like every festival in India, the festival is celebrated in many different ways in different parts of the country. In some parts, women chase away men with sticks in a play as they defend themselves with shields, in some other areas elaborate pujas are conducted while some communities mark Holi by holding bonfires. In Lucknow, the capital of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, the Hindus and Muslims carry out a joint procession to mark interfaith harmony known as the "Holi Baraat".

In many ways, Holi is a festival when social barriers are relaxed as men and women and people across castes, regions and in many cases religions come out to celebrate the start of the spring in India. Adorning themselves in the colours of life, Holi is meant to truly celebrate the spirit of spring midst fun, sweets and songs. Every year, it brings to cheer to ordinary life and gives a reason to once again thank God for the blessings that we are endowed with.

Here is hoping that all of us celebrating around the world can carry on with this cheer in our hearts throughout our lives!
