A family feeling at solidariTEA events across Canada

Posted by admin on Fri, 21/01/2011 - 10:14pm

My mom, Karen Hamilton, and I hosted a SolidariTEA for friends and family on Sunday December 19th. Over 20 people gathered at my home for an afternoon of cupcakes, tea and the MDGs. We gave out information, talked about what's going on in Toronto, and about the incredible work of Project Muso. Overall we raised about $300 and hopefully sparked a lot of interest and awareness in these issues. Bonus --- many of the people there were teachers who hoped to use this information and these causes in their classrooms!

We also got Christ Church Deer Park to host a SolidariTEA on Wednesday, December 15th. A group of about 25 gathers every Wednesday for a brief service and breakfast afterwards, and we encouraged them to make last Wednesday's a special one that focused on the MDGs and social action. The hosts of the breakfast made Masala Chai Tea and talked about their recent trip to India and my mom, Karen Hamilton, spoke about the MDGs and how the Canadian Council of Churches is engaging youth and the MPs on these issues. It was an awareness raising event, and spurred future discussions on these issues.

Lastly, my brother, Gavin Keachie, hosted a SolidariTEA, at King's College on December 7th 2010 in Halifax. He and a couple of other students baked cookies all day (he got most of the baking supplies donated!!) for the first year students who were studying for their big exam (on Dec. 8th). They then sold the cookies and gave out information about the MDGs and the Shine a Light Campaign (sort of like a gift with purchase). They sold about 80-90 cookies and raised over $350 for Shine a Light (combination of sales and baking pledges). The rest of the cookies were donated to a drop-in dinner programme for homeless people run through their Chapel.
